Why the surfactants necessary in cosmetics?

Why the surfactants necessary in cosmetics?

Cosmetics come in many varieties, and their main ingredients, besides water, include moisturizers, preservatives, active ingredients, and surfactants. Surfactants, seemingly insignificant, are indispensable key components in cosmetics, playing multiple important roles.

Surfactants are compounds that reduce the surface tension or interfacial tension of liquids. Their core characteristic is "amphiphilicity"—one end of the molecule has a hydrophilic group that is easily soluble in water, and the other end has a lipophilic group that is easily soluble in oil, like a "two-faced" entity. Everyday soap is a typical surfactant; it can wash away oil stains because the hydrophilic group is rooted in water, the lipophilic group adsorbs the oil, and then the water washes away the oil.

Three main reasons why cosmetics cannot function without surfactants:

First is emulsification. Most cosmetics are in the form of pastes or creams, containing both oil and water, which are immiscible. Surfactants form micelles, encapsulating small oil particles and dispersing them evenly in water, forming a stable emulsion. Upon application, the micelles rupture, releasing the oily active ingredients for absorption by the skin.

Secondly, surfactants have a cleansing effect. For cleansing cosmetics such as facial cleansers and shampoos, surfactants are a core ingredient. Cosmetics use gentle, non-irritating, and hypoallergenic types that effectively remove oil and dirt from skin and hair while protecting the skin barrier.

Finally, surfactants have a conditioning effect. The lipophilic groups of surfactants improve the feel of skin and hair. Some cationic surfactants can be attracted to the negative charge on damaged areas of hair, remaining on the hair to neutralize the charge and reduce frizz, thus providing a conditioning effect.

The most commonly used surfactants SLES and LABSA, have recently experienced rising raw material costs. If you have any purchasing plans in the near future, please contact SINOWIN team for the latest quotes and delivery times.
